Gene Deitch has sadly passed away on thursday night at the age of 95 at his apartment in Prague.
His publisher, Petr Himmel, told the press that his death was unexpected.
Eugene Merrill Deitch, also know as Gene, directed 13 episodes of the children’s cartoon Tom and Jerry and some from the series Popeye.
Munro, his movie, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960. He was also nominated for the same award twice in 1964 for and How to Avoid Friendship and Here’s Nudnik.
Gene is survived by his wife and three sons, from a different marriage, all of whom are cartoonists.
